Client Bunyard House
Location Lake Karapiro
Completed 2007
Architect Director Glenn McHardie designed this project in a previous position as Architect for Creative Arch Ltd in Auckland.
A challenging yet delightful project, converting a previous Mobil Service Station running between Lake Karapiro and State Highway 1 into a striking holiday home, a home for keen water skiers!
With its striking view, the home has been designed to be able to be separated into two sub spaces with a smaller self contained area available for guests with the entrance and internal deck space acting as a buffer between the two zones.
There were a number of constraints with the property including working with the existing building footprint and tying the existing Oamaru stone into the design. The other challenges were to allow light flows into the home from the North and filters through the South facing side of the building.
It feels like you could step off the deck into the Lake, achieved by the stepped retaining wall that avoided the requirement for handrails.
